In early spring I gathered the first dandelions to appear on our property. I lovingly gathered them, roots and all, and gently cleaned them in my kitchen sink. Using my beloved mezzaluna I cut the dandelion leaves, flowers and roots into tiny pieces...and then filled a jar with the fresh greens.
I added 100-proof vodka until it covered the dandelion material. I placed wax paper across the top of the jar and screwed its lid on tightly. For four months I have pulled the jar from its place in my cool, dark cabinet and I have gently shaken it...imagining its future.
When I photographed it - my first dandelion tincture - in the sunlight this morning I couldn't help but feel proud of my accomplishment! And, thankful to the humble dandelion...for his sacrifice. If dandelion was the herb given to Theseus by the goddess Hecate when he was preparing to fight the Minotaur...it will surely provide my family with good health! ♥
