When I first reviewed this photograph I'd taken of a cicada killer grooming itself on garden phlox I thought, What a terrible capture - a cicada killer without its iconic prey...what is the point of such a boring picture?
And then I learned more about cicada killers.
Did you know the adult eastern cicada killer feeds on nectar and sap? Of course! I knew the purpose for capturing cicadas was to feed the wasp's young; why hadn't I thought about the nutritional needs of the adults?
Moreover, this specimen appears to be a smaller male; he may simply be perched on the phlox guarding his territory or waiting for a female. It's not such a boring picture, after-all. ♥
