Yesterday morning we awoke to find the loveliest surprise - in our pond - our water hyacinth was blooming. Among the bright green foliage of floating plants rose the prettiest pale purple blooms.
They don't always bloom (or, at least, we don't always see them bloom). I honestly had forgotten they bloom...the pond irises bloomed in early summer and the tiny white flowers of the anacharis plants still dot the surface of the pond. But the hyacinths? I'd forgotten all about 'em.
We had another surprise at the pond yesterday. We watched a large female dragonfly depositing her eggs on waterside rocks and in moist crevices. Finally, she dipped to the surface of the water to deposit eggs on a strand of anacharis and all of a sudden we heard wild splashing followed by a static-sounding fluttering of wings. A tall stand of iris leaves blocked my view and it wasn't until the dragonfly made her escape that I realized...one of our frogs had lurched at her!
She escaped being his lunch. And her eggs are stowed safely around our pond. ♥
