Oblique Hover Fly (Allograpta obliqua)

I hover closer to earth than I do the clouds.
— Tituss Burgess (1979 -), American actor & singer

Tonight I visited my herb gardens. This year the raised beds are packed, spilling over with horehound, sage, white lavender, garden valerian, lovage, and parsley.

I was hoping to find swallowtail caterpillars munching on the valerian as I had seen the female depositing eggs on its blossoms and undersides of leaves a few weeks ago. I do not see any caterpillars...yet.

Who instead was visiting the herb garden? Lots of beneficial syrphid flies, amorous beetles and lively honeybees. I look forward to returning to that sweet-smelling corner of the backyard - the lavender will soon be in bloom!
