Nature Study for Parents & Educators

  • Hershey Public Library 701 Cocoa Avenue Hershey, PA, 17033 United States (map)

This three-part series provides reluctant parents, grandparents, home educators as well as professional educators with the tools they need to provide children with inexpensive and refreshingly un-scientific, child-led nature study lessons.

  • Jessica begins this three-part workshop by encouraging an informal discussion about “nature study,” what it means and why it is important. A packet of materials (book lists, guides, catalogs, etc.) will be provided.
  • During the second part of the workshop she will discuss: easy-to-implement nature study research methods, opportunities that allow families to engage in citizen science and most importantly, how to encourage children to authentically recognize and value the concept of conservation. She will also share methods and best practices for collecting and studying local flora & fauna.
  • Finally, the class will enjoy a short walk together during which peer-encouragement will strengthen participants’ skills.

Registration must be done in person at the library.

Class fee must be paid at time of registration.
